Assessment

Students

I hold an Assessment Practising Certificate from the British Dyslexia Association, which is the gold-standard of assessment. I .am qualified to undertake full diagnostic assessments for Dyslexia/Specific Learning Difficulties up to the age of 18.

An assessment for dyslexia can not only provide a diagnosis of dyslexia, but also identifies a learner's areas of strength and weakness in order to provide recommendations for a fully tailored learning programme.

Prior to assessment, I have a conversation with the learner's parents and we complete a questionnaire on medical, family and developmental history and discuss any concerns the parents may have. At this point, we decide whether an assessment is appropriate. A visual difficulties is required before an assessment can take place. A questionnaire completed by school can also provide crucial background information both about the learner's strengths and what they find challenging in the classroom.

This consultation is followed by a full diagnostic assessment - a series of short standardised tests which assess verbal, reading and writing skills. It can take up to three hours to complete all the tests, but this can be split into two sessions for younger children.

Following the assessment of the learner, the Assessment Report is written and sent to parents. There is always an opportunity for the parents to discuss the report's findings and recommendations.
